Royal support for Madrid Ryder Cup
Spanish King Juan Carlos, an honorary president of the 2018 Ryder Cup Bid Committee, has declared his support for Madrid’s bid to host golf’s Ryder Cup.

The city last week declared itself a candidate to host the tournament between the United States and Europe.

“Madrid would like to thank His Majesty King Juan Carlos for his support of such an important project for the community of Madrid,” said Esperanza Aguirre, President of the community of Madrid.

“We are hopeful that our bid for the 2018 Ryder Cup is something that the people of Spain and Madrid will be proud of, and we have all the resources necessary for Madrid to become a benchmark for golf in Europe.”

Aside from Spain, five other countries are hoping to host the tournament in 2018: France, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands and Sweden. The deadline for the submission of bids has been set for April 2010, with the hosts to be named in early 2011.
