Bayern Munich cuts into wage bill

Christian Nerlinger, the director of sport at Germany’s biggest football club, Bayern Munich, has said the club’s cost-cutting drive on wages has not finished.
ESPN reports that Bayern has reduced its wage bill significantly by selling four players this winter. Nerlinger has followed this up by saying players should not expect wages to increase as they sign new contracts. "We are going to try to reduce the wages," Nerlinger told Kicker magazine, as reported by ESPN. "The wages have gone through the roof and therefore we have got to get our message through to the players that a new contract does not necessarily mean a pay rise." Bayern sold its joint-biggest earner, Italian striker Luca Toni, to Italian club Roma this winter. Speculation persists that Bayern’s next biggest earner, French star Franck Ribery, will also leave during the summer. Nerlinger has said the club has “reached the limit” with regards to signing new players, after it spent nearly €80 million on new players last summer. |
