IOC suspends Kuwait OC
Kuwait’s National Olympic Committee has been suspended by the Internaitonal Olympic Committee because of political interference by Kuwait’s government.

The IOC said the decision had been taken to “protect the Olympic Movement in Kuwait”, and was effective as of 1 January 2010.

The IOC says that legislation introduced in Kuwait in 2007 means that public authorities ‘clearly interfere’ with the internal functions of the Kuwait’s sports organisations. The IOC had given Kuwait until 31 December 2009 to finalise plans for changes to the offending legislation which the country had undertaken to make.

The IOC said its Executive Board “will not be able to envisage lifting this suspension until the agreements signed are respected and put into effect”.
